A locked gate at the end of the working day is not enough to protect a construction site. Plant, tools, fuel and materials can be removed quickly, while trespassers can enter through a damaged fence or overlooked access point. Knowing how to secure a construction compound means creating visible deterrence, detecting threats early and having a clear response when an incident occurs.
Construction security must reflect the reality of a changing site. Perimeters move, deliveries create access pressures and new structures can obstruct camera views overnight. A practical security plan must therefore be designed around the current layout, maintained as work progresses and supported by people who can act when the site is unattended.
Start with a site-specific risk assessment
No two compounds carry the same risk. A town-centre development with public footfall needs a different approach to a remote infrastructure project with extensive plant storage. Before choosing equipment or deploying guards, identify what needs protecting, where the site is vulnerable and when the risk is highest.
Walk the perimeter and look for weak points rather than assuming the main gate is the only route in. Consider adjoining land, gaps behind welfare units, scaffold access, poorly lit corners and areas hidden from public view.
